Straight outta LA, post-punk rockers HUNNY recently released their debut EP Pain/Ache/Loving to a warm reception. Unearthing a certain nostalgia buried within the nonchalant tunes, the band exercises what they do best in the short collection of new work.
Coming up on an anniversary, the six-piece debuted officially about a year ago with the hit single ‘Cry for Me’. But with Pain/Ache/Loving, the band has raised their own bar for success. Blending a variety of influences, from independent work to the psychedelic sequence of post-punk, pop and a strand of classic 1980’s, HUNNY has created for themselves a distinct potential.
The group consists of front man and lead guitarist Jason Yarger, and his initial cohorts Jake Goldstein on guitar and bassist Gregory Horne, alongside third guitarist Jacob Munk, keyboardist Kevin Grimmett and drummer Joey Anderson. Throughout the years of cultivation, with each new addition to the squad, HUNNY’s sound developed into the infectious, anthemic collaboration that it is at present.
With Pain/Ache/Loving, the desperation and frustration of heartbreak comes forth, presented in dreamy undertones and lovelorn perceptions. Despite the delicate balance of matters of the heart, the EP drives into the eye of sunny melodies and eager bouts of synth-lined hooks that has cadence sweetly dripping from the beat.
Cycling through their strengths, the EP features the likes of the lightly psychedelic ‘Belle Femme’. Characterized by Yarger’s reedy vocals, the poetry achingly sinks into an easy chorus as he sings, “Dreaming of you is all I can do”. The same yearning composition drives the track ‘Parking Lot’ in bursts of energy at the hook. With a harder beat, some of that lovelorn pain begins to surface, while ‘Natalie’ takes the loving approach in its plea for a kiss. Softer and steeped in hues of classic 1980’s, it brilliantly stands apart from the rest of the collection.
Much like HUNNY themselves stand out from the crowd. In a flawless cohesion of styles and inspiration, the band has perhaps with this EP shortlisted themselves as ones to watch in the coming years.
